The UFC Octagon returned to where it all began back in 1993, Denver, Colorado. The evolution of the sport has been very impressive, who would have thought that more than 23 years later there would be a main event between women, let alone women with such technical ability like ‘Bullet’ Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ Pena.
Both women entered the octagon knowing that a victory would seal their ticket for a title shot against reigning bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes, who happened to be in attendance and paying close attention to the fight that would determine her next opponent.
The fight began with Julianna pushing Valentina to the side of the cage while looking for a takedown, but after a brief struggle it would be Shevchenko who would score the takedown, she would actually get 2 of them in the first round and landed a few shots in the ground & pound.
For the second round Pena would come out more determined to establish her game and once again put Valentina’s back against the cage. The Russian striker defended well a few times but by the half of the round got taken down. Just when Julianna looked more comfortable and in control of the fight, Valentina saw an opening and went for an armbar, which she sank beautifully to take home the win and earn herself a rematch versus champion Amanda Nunes.
