Exactly 10 years ago, on February 3, 2007, Travis Lutter wasted his opportunity to take the middleweight belt by failing to make weight. He also made Anderson Silva angry for his lack of professionalism and was submitted by the champion in the second round.
Lutter stalked and looked for a takedown early on while Silva effortlessly moved away and out of danger. Trying for a flying knee moments later, Silva’s attack was muffled by Lutter who took the off-balance Brazilian down. This was the first time ‘The Spider’ was put on his back in the UFC, he managed to get back up, only to have Travis grab his foot and take him down again.
After a few second of both fighters throwing punches, Lutter got to side control and then to full mount. He pounded away on the champion, but Silva weathered the storm and stood up, drawing a roar from the crowd present at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Lutter opened the second round with another takedown, but this time Silva responded with a kick to the head from the ground. This was the beginning of the end for Lutter.
