On January 14th of 2012 Jose Aldo was the undisputed featherweight champion of the UFC, but unlike now, Jose Aldo REALLY was the undisputed champion. He was riding a 13-victory streak and had succesfully defended the UFC belt twice already. Granted, his 2 most recent victories were via decision and people were beginning to say he had lost his edge.
His opponent that night in Rio de Janeiro was Chad Mendes, who up until that fight was undefeated and had an impressive record of 11-0. He was also the newest jewel in Team Alpha Male and Urijah Faber’s hope to take the belt to Sacramento.
The HSBC Arena was packed by the time the main event of UFC 142 was about to begin. Most experts believed Chad Mendes was going to be Aldo’s hardest fight to date, based on his superb wrestling and cardio.
The result was a surprise for many, Jose Aldo summoned his old self and destroyed Mendes in round one with a memorable knee that sent Chad flat on his back.
