Since he ‘reliquished’ the UFC featherweight belt, Conor McGregor has been awfully quiet. Although this is highly unusual we have learned that maybe is because he’s busy taking care of other things.
According to his management, the UFC lightweight champion applied for a boxing license in the state of California. After receiving his license to box in California, McGregor will also be applying for a boxing license in other prominent states as well. States such as New York, Nevada and Texas are likely at the top of the list as regular destinations for the biggest boxing events in the United States. This opens the door to the ‘Superfight’ Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather Jr.
While an immediate fight with Mayweather is unlikely, it wouldn’t take long for McGregor to earn a shot against Mayweather in the business of boxing. According to Marc Raimondi of MMA Fighting the California State Athletic Comission wouldn’t rule out the bout
“He’s qualified [as a boxer],” Foster said. “I’d love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent. Certainly a high-level opponent. We’re happy to license him. We’re happy he’s a California fighter.”
McGregor vs Mayweather
McGregor has offered to fight Mayweather several times. While demanding at least $100 million from the former pound-for-pound champion to meet in the ring under boxing rules.
McGregor is also under contract to the UFC. So he would need permission from them before he could pursue a match with Mayweather or any other boxer for that matter.
UFC president Dana White has commented in the past that he would be open to the possibility. But the two parties have never come together to hold a conversation on the matter.
Both McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. have been teasing a super-fight for quite some time now. There are no concrete plans for them to box at this time.
