After securing his dream Conor McGregor is taking a break. It was no secret how important was for Conor (and maybe for Dana White as well) to be the first fighter to hold belts in 2 different divisions at the same time. Now that the goal is achieved, the lightweight and featherweight champion will step away for a while.
At the UFC 205 post-fight press conference McGregor announced his girlfriend is having a baby in the spring. He also mentioned he wanted to rest while awaiting the birth of his first child in May.
McGregor has been one of the most active fighters on the UFC roster in the last 18 months. Today UFC president Dana White has also confirmed the Irishman’s absence for the next several months.
According to White, McGregor is not only taking time off for himself, but also for his girlfriend Dee Devlin. So she doesn’t have the burden of the stress of another fight while she’s dealing with her first pregnancy.
The words of Dana White:
“He won’t fight before May. His girl gets super stressed out when he fights. He doesn’t want her having any of that stress while she’s pregnant. He’s good. He should take time off. He’s been fighting nonstop. Nothing wrong with him taking time off. It’s good for him and her and it’s good for the baby.”
Dana White didn’t comment on McGregor’s demand of receiving some sort of ownership stake in the UFC after his amazing numbers of the past couple of years.
McGregor said he wanted to sit down with the new owners from WME-IMG. The aim is to discuss his future before booking anymore fights in the Octagon. When or where that might happen remains to be seen. Even if the UFC were to refuse, McGregor may have another way to get ownership. Through the generosity of a celebrity who owns part of the UFC and offered to share it with Conor.
